  • The 24,000 square foot, two-story Visitor’s Center is home to Birmingham’s Vulcan statue.

  • The Visitor’s Center houses a museum that traces the history of the Birmingham region, as well as a community room and administrative offices.

  • The construction of the Visitor’s Center consists of steel roof joists and composite structural steel floor framing supported by structural steel columns and exterior concrete walls.

  • The project also included monument restoration which included analysis of existing structure to accommodate anticipated modifications as well as the new Vulcan statue armature design constructed with stainless steel.

  • Also included is an observation balcony designed with stainless steel detailed to match the original historic balcony, a tower base structure, a new free-standing elevator tower and bridge to tower observation deck.

  • The foundations for the project are shallow foundations bearing on rock.
