The 24,000 square foot, two-story Visitor’s Center is home to Birmingham’s Vulcan statue.
The Visitor’s Center houses a museum that traces the history of the Birmingham region, as well as a community room and administrative offices.
The construction of the Visitor’s Center consists of steel roof joists and composite structural steel floor framing supported by structural steel columns and exterior concrete walls.
The project also included monument restoration which included analysis of existing structure to accommodate anticipated modifications as well as the new Vulcan statue armature design constructed with stainless steel.
Also included is an observation balcony designed with stainless steel detailed to match the original historic balcony, a tower base structure, a new free-standing elevator tower and bridge to tower observation deck.
The foundations for the project are shallow foundations bearing on rock.
