University of South Alabama Cancer Center
Mobile, Alabama
- 107,000 Square Feet
- New cancer research and treatment facility configured with separate wings for research and treatment functions.
- The building is sited near a hurricane ocean line with 150 mile per hour wind speed design requirements.
- The treatment wing is approximately 70,000 square feet in area and the research wing is approximately 37,000 square feet in area.
- The treatment wing is a 3-story composite steel frame and houses thick walled concrete bunkers for linear accelerators, THOMO units and PET scans used in radiation therapy.
- The research wing is a 2-story conventionally reinforced cast-in-place concrete frame with a steel framed mechanical penthouse.
- Since this wing houses sensitive research equipment, the design was required to conform to specific vibration requirements.
- The connecting element between the two wings contains a 2-story atrium requiring a structural steel back-up frame for the curtain wall structure that is exposed to hurricane force wind loads.
- Both wings are supported on auger-cast concrete piles and grade beams.
